Hey David, your review of this novel has compelled me to put it on hold at the SPL. I also enjoy the descriptions of gritty labor and racial relations in the 1950s USWC. Have you read Pick Up by Charles Willeford? More focused on the street life of 1950s California but also with an interesting take on racial relations.
PS that Willeford book was pulp and hard to find in a good edition. I have a query in with one bookseller as to how he could have a "signed" 2203 edition when Willeford died in 1988. . .In any case, Willeford appears to be a very interesting character. Thanks for the tip.
Hi Russ, Thanks for the tip. I'll buy a copy today online.
Think you will really enjoy the Himes novel. I have his other two non-detective novels. One is a prison novel. Himes was in prison for years. I need to psyche myself up to read a prison novel.
Let me know what you think of the Himes. And let me know any other maritime or waterfront reads I may have missed.
